You know, when they were trying to decide on our national bird, Benjamin Franklin proposed that it be the American Turkey because, apparently, turkeys are very inteligent or something. Yay, history facts!
Eagles had long been a symbol of secular power. Franklin objected to the Bald Eagle because he esteemed it a bird of "poor moral character", citing its habit of trying to steal prey from others.
On the other hand, he praised the wild turkey as a fearless creature of independent spirit, mentioning that he had even heard of them harassing British soldiers... 7@=e
